A warming climate, i.e. global warming, is changing the conditions in which wildfires and residential fires occur. Heat, drought, strong winds, and the materials found in modern homes can combine to create fires that spread with alarming speed. Understanding these factors is essential as communities work to protect families, homes, and neighborhoods.
Heat and drought create the perfect conditions for fire. Prolonged periods of high temperatures dry out vegetation, soil, grass, and trees, turning landscapes into readily available fuel. During drought, plants lose moisture and become easier to ignite. Extremely dry conditions can also allow a fire to move from forests and grasslands into residential areas.
Wind can transform a manageable fire into a rapidly moving disaster. Strong winds supply fires with oxygen and can carry burning embers far ahead of the main fire. These embers may land on roofs, decks, vegetation, or other combustible materials and ignite structures that are not directly adjacent to the original fire. In some disasters, embers have traveled considerable distances, creating multiple ignition points throughout a neighborhood.
The homes themselves can also contribute to how quickly fires grow. Modern houses contain numerous synthetic materials, including plastics, foams, vinyl products, adhesives, carpets, and petroleum-derived furnishings. When exposed to intense heat, some of these materials can ignite, melt, or produce combustible gases. Synthetic furnishings can also contribute to rapid fire growth and produce significant amounts of smoke and toxic combustion products.
This does not mean that modern homes are inherently unsafe. Building design, fire-resistant materials, landscaping, and community planning can significantly reduce risk.
Communities can become more fire-resilient by taking action before an emergency occurs. Homeowners can maintain defensible space around buildings by removing dead vegetation, keeping trees and shrubs appropriately maintained, and reducing combustible materials near structures. Roofs, vents, windows, decks, and siding can also be designed or upgraded with fire resistance in mind.
Neighborhoods can work together rather than leaving individual homeowners to address wildfire risk alone. Local governments can strengthen building codes, improve evacuation routes, maintain reliable emergency communication systems, and encourage fire-resistant construction and landscaping. Communities can also conduct evacuation drills so residents know where to go and what to do before smoke or flames arrive.
Perhaps most importantly, fire resilience requires recognizing that extreme heat, drought, wind, and changing building materials are interconnected risks. Preparing for fire should not begin when smoke appears on the horizon.
A fire-resilient community is one that plans ahead, educates its residents, protects its most vulnerable neighbors, and invests in safer homes and infrastructure. As environmental conditions continue to change, preparation can mean the difference between a disaster that overwhelms a community and one from which a community can recover.
