Black Poets Society: Our history

By B. Lyte Black Poet’s Society

Where do I come from

It seems as though it’s a history we run from

Or better yet a history we don’t even know exists

Because the system set into place

Aims to erase our existence

What is the black experience

We must channel the spirits

Of our ancestors

So we can understand their journey

And how they got here

Because if we don’t know who we are

We will never know who we should be

It’s bigger than you and me

This is about unity

This is about community

This is about reclaiming our namesake

Because we built these United States

T R U T H

We got nothing to lose

We got nothing to prove

Our only responsibility is to do what we wanna do

And we want to be free

You, me, everybody

We are our ancestors wildest dream

Happy Juneteenth
