I think about that saying a lot, and I think you should too. Only, it’s not just a saying. It’s a truth that should travel faster than the hatred that is often shoveled over it.
To Young People of Color
Black excellence is not a trend, a moment, or a hashtag. It is a legacy. It is something deeply rooted in history, carried through generations, and alive in you right now.
To be a person of color is to stand at the intersection of resilience and possibility. You are the continuation of stories that refused to be erased, dreams that refused to be deferred, and brilliance that refused to be dimmed.
Black excellence begins with understanding that your identity is not a limitation. It is a source of power. The richness of your culture, the strength of your ancestors, and the uniqueness of your perspective are all assets. The world may try to define you before you have the chance to define yourself, but true excellence is found in reclaiming that narrative. It is found in saying, “I am more than what you expect of me.”
Excellence does not mean perfection. It does not mean you will never fail, struggle, or feel uncertain. In fact, the journey toward excellence is built on those very moments. Every setback is a lesson; every obstacle, a stepping stone. What matters is your commitment to rise again, to keep going even when the path feels unclear. That persistence, that quiet and determined courage, is a form of excellence in itself.
Representation matters, but remember this: you are not just waiting to see yourself reflected in the world. You are here to become someone others will one day look up to. Whether you pursue art, healthcare, business, education, or any path that calls to you, your presence has an impact. You are breaking barriers simply by showing up, by striving, and by daring to believe that you belong in spaces that were not always built with you in mind.
There will be moments when doubt creeps in, when the weight of expectations feels heavy, or when the world seems unwilling to see your worth. In those moments, return to your foundation. Remember where you come from. Remember the strength that flows through your bloodline. You are not starting from nothing. You are building on everything that came before you.
Black excellence is also about lifting others as you climb. It is about community. It is about recognizing that your success does not exist in isolation. When you open doors, reach back and hold them open for someone else. When you learn something, share it. When you rise, bring others with you.
That collective strength is what turns individual achievement into lasting impact. It is what transforms success into legacy. And legacy is what Black excellence has always been about.
So walk boldly. Dream unapologetically. Learn continuously. Lead with integrity. And never forget that your story matters.
