Black Poets Society: Society is A Choice

By Donalda Brantley The Black Lens

Society is a choice

I’ll try to talk

But with what voice?

Still, you can ask me what I mean by

“Society is a choice?”

And I’ll try to answer

But with what voice?

My hands have been tied

And my lips sealed shut

I’m talking but no one understands

All they ask is “what?”

I am different

Something they think of as a mutt

They ask what i am

All they ask is “what?”

They forgot that this is their doing

Their words their opinions

It’s all misconstruing

How did they forget that this is their will?

How they want it? How they feel?

They forgot that society is a choice

I could tell you more

But with what voice?
