Shades of Motherhood: Women’s Equality Day: Ensuring Women of Color are included in every birth story

By Stephy Nobles-Beans Shades of Motherhood

Every year during the month of August, we acknowledge Women’s Equality Day. We celebrate the progress women have made in the pursuit of equal rights, opportunities, and representation. While this day commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment and women’s right to vote, it also serves as a reminder that true equality is still a work in progress. For many women, especially Women of Color, equal access to quality healthcare, maternal support, and respectful treatment during pregnancy and childbirth remains an ongoing challenge.

Equality should never depend on the color of a woman’s skin, her income, or her ZIP code. Every mother deserves to experience a pregnancy and birth journey that is safe, supported, and filled with dignity.

At The Shades of Motherhood Network, we believe every mother deserves to be seen, heard, valued, and empowered throughout her prenatal and postpartum journey. Our work is rooted in the understanding that healthy mothers build healthy families, and healthy families strengthen healthy communities.

Women of Color continue to experience significant disparities in maternal healthcare. Too often, their concerns are dismissed, their symptoms are overlooked, and barriers to culturally responsive care lead to poorer health outcomes. These inequities are not simply statistics. They represent real mothers, real babies, and real families whose lives are forever impacted.

Women’s Equality Day reminds us that equality must extend beyond legislation. It must be reflected in hospitals, clinics, community programs, and healthcare systems where every woman receives compassionate, respectful, and equitable care. Equality means listening to mothers when they speak. It means ensuring access to prenatal education, mental health support, lactation services, nutrition resources, family navigation, and postpartum care without bias or discrimination.

The Shades of Motherhood Network is committed to walking alongside mothers every step of the way. Through our doulas, family navigators, peer support specialists, educational workshops, wellness resources, and community partnerships, we strive to create an environment where women feel confident, informed, and supported as they welcome new life into the world.

Our vision extends beyond pregnancy. We recognize that postpartum recovery, emotional well-being, and family stability are equally important. Every mother deserves continued care long after delivery because childbirth is not the finish line. It is the beginning of a lifelong journey.

As we honor Women’s Equality Day, we also celebrate the resilience, strength, and brilliance of Women of Color who continue to advocate for themselves, their families, and future generations. Their voices matter. Their stories matter. Their health matters.

Let this day be more than a celebration of the past. Let it be a renewed commitment to building a future where maternal health equity is not an aspiration, but a reality.

Together, we can create communities where every mother has access to quality prenatal care, compassionate postpartum support, culturally responsive services, and the opportunity to experience the beautiful birth journey she deserves.

Because when Women of Color thrive, families thrive. When families thrive, communities flourish. And when every mother is treated with dignity and equality, we all move closer to the true promise of Women’s Equality Day.
